In Austria, access to the church registers is governed by the Civil Status Act (§ 52 PStG 2013).
On the basis of its provisions, the following access restrictions apply: Registers for births and baptisms are locked for a period of at least 100 years. Registers for marriages and deaths are usually available up until the year 1938. All requests for information on records after the year 1938 have to be directed to the Civil Registry Offices without exception.
Within the framework of the respective legal provisions, information is provided to authorised persons (§ 52 Abs. 1 PStG 2013) as well as public authorities.
